There are few things more awkward than the friend zone. It's a topic Marshmello and Anne-Marie are all too familiar with thanks to their new collaboration, "Friends."

"We really always write and want to make stuff that sounds like nothing before," Anne-Marie told The New Guys at 97.1 AMP Radio. "And I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song about putting someone in the friend zone."

"It’s hard to put someone in the friend zone," she added. "It’s hard to be in the friend zone. And this song just kind of makes a joke out of it. And hopefully it makes people feel better."

The DJ and British singer-songwriter met for the first time back in December and it didn't take long for them to craft their official friendzone anthem.

"We connected in the studio and he had some stuff that he was working on that day, just playing it out loud and I was like, ‘I need to write to this song right now.’ So we wrote and recorded it within three hours and that was it."

Even though they haven't spent any more time in the recording studio since the release of "Friends," it sounds like this won't be the last track we hear from the dynamic duo.

"I think we’d love to [collaborate again]. I’m speaking on behalf of him! I’d love to. I think he’s incredible."
