Calvin Harris is feeling better than ever, just hours after releasing his brand new single, “My Way.”
“I feel a lot of freedom at the moment,” he told Carson Daly on 97.1 AMP Radio. “It’s really nice. I’m really kind of pursuing what I really want to do. I’m so happy this record’s finally coming out. I can’t wait to hear the reaction.”
Harris teased fans on Twitter about who would be featured on the track and after much speculation, he surprised everyone with a song comprised of his own vocals.
“I did this with ‘Feel So Close’ and ‘We Found Love.’” he explained. “A lot of the reason why I did this was I like the juxtaposition, like yeah, I just worked with one of the greats [Rihanna] and now I’m going to just take it back to just me because I can. So, why not?”
The concept for “My Way” was ten years in the making, back when Harris was stocking shelves at a supermarket before getting his big break.
“I was trying to move to London and pursue music – and obviously that job was in my way. It was stopping me [from] doing that. I just wanted to make songs for a living, you know?”
Luckily, the 32-year-old Scottish DJ was able to find a way to break into the business. He’s logged ten straight platinum singles, been named Forbes’ highest-earning DJ in the world, and collaborated with many of the biggest artists in the world.
Harris released his most recent album, Motion, back in 2014 and it may be his last.
“[It was] the label’s idea to do an album album and I did that with Motion and it didn’t seem like a great idea, you know, in the end because it was just a lot of time on some records that a lot of people just don’t hear because people consume music differently now. Now more than ever, I want to put all of my efforts into one song at a time and make it as good as I can possibly make it and then just release it out into the world.”
“I’m not saying it’s going to work like that for every artist,” he continued. “And I still want to hear an album by Beyoncé and I still want to hear an album by Frank Ocean, but for me, I think it works perfectly.”
