As Grease‘s Danny and Sandy once sang, “Summer fling, don’t mean a thing, but uh oh, those summer nights!”

Whether you meet a hottie while hanging out at the beach, or during a vacation trip – summer is the perfect time for love. While many summer flings unfortunately don’t have the longest life span, they still can be a lot of fun. Here’s some do’s and don’ts on how to enjoy that summer romance.

  • Try something new. Whether it’s visiting a place you’ve never been, or trying out a new restaurant, it’s much more fun sharing experiences with someone.
  • Ask about their interests. Part of the fun of getting to know someone is finding out what they enjoy. Chances are, you’ll have something in common.
  • Walks on the beach.  A romantic summer favorite that never gets old.
  • Check out a concert. It’s said that you are what you listen to, so get to know each other better through some live music.
  • Use compliments.  Complimenting someone always makes them feel good about themselves.  But don’t go overboard.  Just a little, “You look great!” goes a long way.
  • Pull out your new shoes or new outfit you’ve been dying to wear. It’s fun to dress to impress – just remember whatever clothes you’re wearing, to still be yourself.

  • Don’t talk only about yourself.  In order to get to know someone, you have to learn when to gab, and when to just listen.
  • Drop the “we” card too much.  “We should go here after summer’s over,” “We are the cutest couple ever.”  Give this new relationship a chance to find it’s footing first.
  • Don’t blow up their phone. You may think it’s a good idea to text “What’s up?” every hour, and after a few drinks you may think it’s an even better idea to call several times.  But hold off.  If they want to see you, they will.
  • In relation to the aforementioned, avoid being clingy.  Sometimes being overly available is a turn-off.
  • Though it’s a good sign if their friends like you, it’s can quickly be a bad move if you instantly adopt them as your friends.  Remember, if the relationship ends, their loyalty isn’t to you, and it can just make things weird.
  • Don’t hook up with their friends!  Just because it’s a summer fling, doesn’t mean you have to be a homie-hopper. #notagoodlook

Have fun, and enjoy your summer!
