Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Take Fundraising Campaign To Broadway

By Caitlyn Trudnich

Grammy-winning hip-hop duo, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, are taking their fundraising efforts to Broadway. The rap stars, along with Ryan Lewis’ mother and HIV-positive advocate Julie Lewis, created the 30/30 Project, which raises money and brings awareness to HIV/AIDS causes.  This project will now partner with the Tony-nominated Broadway play, Mothers and Sons, starring Tyne Daly.

Mothers and Sons dynamic story is about a mother (Daly) who loses her son to AIDS.  She later visits his former partner, who has gotten married and had a son, and builds a relationship with them.

In a joint statement, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis said, “This vital play keeps the message going strong, and we are proud to lend our voices to help this cause.”

On June 11th, there will be a post-performance “TalkOut,” in which the cast and Julie Lewis will discuss the topics the play and the organization share.  Donations collected after the show, as well as merchandise and signed items by the cast and playwright, Terrence McNally, will be sold, with the proceeds will support the 30/30 Project and Construction for Change, an organization that will oversee construction management and funding of new medical facilities.

Lead Producer, Tom Kirdahy, discussed his excitement for this partnership with Billboard, saying, “It’s always been my goal to marry commercial productions with social justice.  June is pride month so it feels right to be launching this at this moment. It starts here on Broadway, and hopefully it will extend well beyond New York. The mission of 30/30 is universal. There’s no expiration date and there’s no reason to stop.”
