The Voice live episodes kicked off Monday night, which means it’s now America’s turn to decide the fate of the remaining 12 contestants.

That pressure alone is enough to give someone a serious case of stage fright, but imagine performing in front of a national audience when all of a sudden your microphone cuts out?

Unfortunately, Team Shakira’s Kristen Merlin was a victim of technical difficulties yesterday when her microphone stopped working during her performance of “Stay.”

Merlin handled it like a pro, powering through the ballad even though the TV audience at home couldn’t hear a thing. Carson explained what happened during his Tuesday morning recap on AMP Radio:

“Everybody on the red carpet, that’s what they wanted to talk about,” he said. “I felt bad for her, but I thought she handled it great.”

“It’s a live show, things like that are going to happen,” Producer Angie chimed in. “I’m surprised that that’s the first time it happened in six seasons.”

“Kudos to Kristen Merlin,” Carson added. “I know she was bummed, but she did such a great job and we’ll see what happens tonight.”

This evening, Carson will announce the bottom three vote-getters. That’s where the Twitter Instant Save comes into play.

Here’s how it works in case you forgot from last season. Follow The Voice on Twitter. Sometime around 5:45pm PT (8:45pm ET), the show will tweet the names of the bottom three.

Then it’s up to you the tweet the name of the person you want to save, along with the hashtag #VoiceSave. The contestant with the most tweets will be saved from elimination. It’s as easy as that!

People have complained in the past that us West Coasters can’t get in on the Twitter Save portion of the competition, but that’s simply not the case.

“You don’t need to be watching the show [live] to save them,” Carson explained. “If you want to be a part of it, with everybody else, just follow The Voice on Twitter and we’ll do the rest. And if you know who you want to save and if you see that name on the bottom, then save them. That’s it.”

He continued: “The Twitter Save, by and large for most of the country, it’s a great way for us to just continue to turn the control over of the show, at this point, away from the coaches and to the audience.”
