Last year, Brooklyn Nets player Jason Collins became the first-ever professional athlete to announce he was gay, which took a tremendous amount of courage.

Then soon after, Missouri defensive end Michael Sam revealed he too was also gay and chose to announce it before the NFL Draft, which was a big deal because it could have had an significant impact on draft day.

Yesterday, UMass guard Derrick Gordon made the same announcement after finishing his sophomore year. He tweeted:

It flat out sucks that this is something that is still a big deal, but at the moment it is, and it’s rad that a young man like Derrick has the courage and strength to stand up for who he is.

There’s always people in life who have the courage to step out and lead the way, whatever the cause, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or whatever it may be.  We need people like this in the world!

Nice work, Derrick. Now get back in the gym and work on that cross over!  Let’s take a look at an interview with Derrick from SB Nation for today’s Viral Video of the Day.
