KTLA’s Sam Rubin Confuses Samuel L. Jackson With Laurence Fishburne

Everybody makes mistakes. It just happens.

Luckily for most of us, our embarrassing moments aren’t caught on live TV with millions of viewers just waiting to post a clip on YouTube.

Unfortunately, that’s what happened to entertainment reporter Sam Rubin during Monday’s KTLA Morning News.

Rubin was interviewing Samuel L. Jackson via satellite when he asked the actor if he got “a lot of reaction from that Super Bowl commercial.”

Although Jackson appeared in a trailer for Captain America, Rubin was actually referring to a Kia commercial starring Lawrence Fishburse reprising his Matrix role.

Rubin’s gaffe set off Jackson, who absolutely schooled the local reporter.

“You’re the entertainment reporter for this station and you don’t know the difference between me and Laurence Fishburne? That must be a very short line for your job outside there,” he said.

“I’m the other guy,” he continued. “There’s more than one black guy doing a commercial. I’m the ‘What’s in your wallet?’ black guy. He’s the car black guy. Morgan Freeman is the other credit card black guy. You only hear his voice, though, so you probably won’t confuse him with Laurence Fishburne.”

Rubin issued a formal apology later during the broadcast.

“I pride myself on the fact — that unlike a lot of people who do this kind of work — more often than not, I really do know what I’m talking about. But I didn’t 30 minutes ago, and I’m really embarrassed about it, and I very much apologize to Samuel L. Jackson and anyone else who was offended for what was a very amateur mistake,” Rubin said.

Carson, who has spent hundreds of hours on live TV, sympathized with the apologetic Rubin.

“I feel for Sam because I’ve done a million of those types of interviews and it happens! You do live TV that much, something like that is going to happen,”¬†Carson explained. “It was a dumb mistake. No one knows that more than Sam, he said it himself. He screwed it up.”

However, matters went from bad to worse when Rubin called into TMZ Live to address the situation. He mentioned he was upset that the gossip website did not include a mention about his formal apology and that complaint set off one of the writers.
