High School Football Team Makes History With Female Kicker

Olivia Viney has played soccer for years, but she didn’t start making headlines until she became “one of the boys” on Marine City’s high school football team in Michigan.

That’s because Viney became the first female player in MHSAA finals history to score points.

The dynamite kicker punted it through the uprights for seven extra-points, which ties the MHSAA football finals record, and sets a new record for the Mariners.

“I want to cry, but I’m too excited,” Viney said in an interview with MLive. “I just thought being on varsity would be so much fun with the fans and the band. Coming out here to Ford Field, playing on the same field as the Lions, and winning a state ring is the best feeling.”

With Viney’s help, Marine City defeated Grand Rapids South Christian 49-35 in the Division 4 state title game.

“I didn’t really fathom how great this would be until a couple people told me I was going to be the first female player,” Viney said. “I thought about all the divisions, and years, and it’s amazing. It’s such an honor, this season has been more than I ever dreamed it would be.”

Over the entire season, she has tacked on 61 extra points to the scoreboard. Viney admitted she initially decided to try out for the football team as a joke.

“It was kind of a joke at first,” she explained. “They said come be our kicker we don’t have one. At first it was just absurd, but then after talking with my dad and my brother, I thought why not? I’ve played soccer my whole life, I might be good at it.”
