Tuesday night on The VoiceCarson introduced a brand new element…the instant save!

Here’s how it works: Once he announces the bottom three vote-getters, all of us fans get the chance to save someone on the spot with a little help from Twitter.

All you have to do is tweet the hashtag #VoiceSave along with the name of the contestant and the artist with the most mentions after five minutes is spared from the chopping block.

Seems easy enough, right? Well, who knew so much drama could hinge on just 140 characters?!

“It is exciting,” Carson told Producer Angie Wednesday morning. “I’ve never walked onto the stage not knowing where the ship is headed, which is a terrifying feeling on a show where 10 million people are staring at you.”

It all came down to Team Christina’s Josh Logan and Team Cee Lo’s Jonny Gray and Kat Robichaud. Take a look at how it all went down:

Kat squeaked by this week, which means coaches Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green each only have two artists left on their teams.

“At this point, you’re bummed when anybody goes home, but I’m glad Kat made it through,” Carson explained. “I don’t think she’s done really well up until this point and I know how good she is…She’s probably going to sing for her life every time now.”

Critics of the instant save have argued that the west coast gets a bum deal because the window of tweeting happens live on the east coast, but Carson assures that everyone is eligible to participate.

“It is fair if you think about it. At one time, the entire country is in on it if you’re a fan of the show and you know the right information, which is you have to follow The Voice on Twitter.”

The instant save could also come in handy when frontrunners unexpectedly end up in the bottom three.

“I think it’s an added experience for The Voice fan to be watching it just go, ‘This is kind of cool. I can affect the last five minutes of the show.’ I think that’s probably where live TV is headed into some degree. Letting people in.”
