Katy Perry “Roars” On AMP Radio With Carson Daly

Today was supposed to be the big day.

Katy Perry had been teasing her new single, “Roar,” for a couple weeks with a series of video clips and one flashy gold semi-truck, but internet hackers just couldn’t handle the wait.

The track leaked over the weekend, and even though things didn’t go as planned, Katy isn’t letting that get her down.

“Sometimes you just want to have like a little bit of a movie magic moment because you’re like setting up a surprise,” Perry told Carson Daly Monday morning on 97.1 AMP Radio.

“It’s kind of like when your little brother comes in Christmas Day and opens up your present and you’re like, ‘No! That’s my present to open!’ But you know what? It is a present. I’m very excited everybody’s listening to it. It’s number one in like 20 countries already, first day out, and I couldn’t be more happy.”

In a rare moment of solidarity, Katy Perry reached out to fellow pop songstress Lady Gaga when both of their singles popped up online.

Their dueling release dates got the music critics buzzing, but Perry shot down any notion of rivalry.

“It’s all about the music and I really agree with her message. I’ve always been a fan of hers and I like to see her evolution. I think that it’s also nice that we’re all in the same kind of cycle together because it really keeps us both on our toes…It’s not that we feel competition, it’s that we keep each other on each other’s toes and it’s a healthy thing.”

“Roar” is the lead single off Perry’s fourth studio album, Prism, which goes on sale October 22.

“The reason I call it Prism is because, you know, I was going through a lot of stuff and I finally let the light into my life through many different things and I feel like I let so much light into my life and now I get to share all of the light that I’ve experienced and kind of beam it all…beam it. I sound like an alien! Beam it onto all of my fans through these songs and so I feel very prismatic.”

After delivering one of the most popular albums of all time, enduring a sudden divorce with Russell Brand, and stepping out in a very public relationship with John Mayer, it’s clear Katy had lots of subject matter to cover when it came time to write some new material.

“It’s a record about self-reflection and self-empowerment and learning to deal with the curve balls that life throws you every single day and how I’m going to get through them.”

The 28-year-old Santa Barbara native doesn’t like to reveal much about her personal life during interviews, but she’s opening up the floodgates on this latest record.

“If you really want to know the facts, the truths, and the falses of me, you can definitely Nancy Drew the shhh-enanigans. You can Nancy Drew or Sherlock Holmes all of my songs and you can find those truths,” she explained. “It’s kind of like that’s where you get all of me.”
