Ariana Grande Gives Carson Daly A Taste Of “Yours Truly”

Ariana Grande is on top of the world with her breakout hit song “The Way” and her own Nickelodeon show, but even she still gets a little giddy when she hears her music on the radio.

The star dropped by AMP Radio Tuesday morning and was caught by surprise when she heard her new single, “Baby I,” blasting through the bathroom speakers.

“It was really exciting,” Grande explained to Carson Daly. “I was peeing and listening to myself sing at the same time. I was like, grooving, while I was peeing! It was great.”

Ever since “The Way” hit radio airwaves, the 20-year-old with an incredible four-octave range has been compared to the likes of Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. Grande couldn’t be more flattered by that critique.

“I love Mariah, I love Whitney, I love Brandy, I love Monica, I love TLC, Destiny’s Child. That was my favorite era, the late ’80s to early 2000s. That place for women in music was great for me.”

“You weren’t even alive in the late ’80s!” Producer Angie pointed out, but that hasn’t stopped Grande from embracing a retro vibe on her upcoming album, Yours Truly, due out September 3.

“There’s a handful of records [on the album] that have that sort of throwback to the ’90s vibe and then the rest of them are just sort of like a really cool, special, fresh sound that I think me and the producers that I worked with have done a really good job coming up with on our own.”

Grande is particularly proud of the three songs she penned for Yours Truly.

“The ones that I wrote have a little bit of a doo-woppy undertone to them and that was my favorite thing. They’re really special and cool and I think the album is very listenable. I wanted to make sure if I were buying the album, I wouldn’t want to skip over any of them.”

The album includes collaborations with Mac Miller, The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes, and Big Sean, but Grande is open to adding more featured guests if it feels right.

“In the future, if we pick one of the singles that we think could have a cool feature on it, we’ll throw somebody on it.”

September 3 may seem a long ways off, but Grande is already moving full steam ahead with her music career, opening for Justin Bieber’s final three North American¬†Believe world tour stops.

“It’s my first time performing with in-ears in my ears, which is crazy! It feels so weird because I love using my natural ear. I’m so used to using my natural ears for everything, but when I put them in my ears, they go so deep into my brain that I can’t hear anything else!” she laughed.

“I love it, but it’s definitely weird and something to get used to.”

She follow that up with her own mini-tour, dubbed The Listening Sessions.

“We’re playing intimate venues for my fans just so that they can get a first look at the album. So, we’re performing the entire album, top to bottom for them.”

Ariana’s acting career isn’t slowing down anytime soon either. Her spinoff series, Sam & Cat, debuted on Nickelodeon this past June to impressive ratings, but at the end of the day, the former Broadway star refuses to give up her musical roots.

“I love my experience that I’ve had on Nickelodeon. I’m so thankful for it and I love the people I’ve met through it, but as far as acting goes, it’s not where my heart is, for sure. If I had to pick, I would definitely pick music in a heartbeat.”
