Rolling Stone ignited a country-wide debate following the release of their latest cover photo, which features Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The Twitter-verse called for an all-out boycott. Even Carson and Producer Angie voiced their own disgust for what they believe is an inappropriate choice.

But it’s not just us average Joes taking action. Major retailers like CVS, 7-Eleven, Rite Aid, Kmart, and Walgreens are refusing to stock the issue on their store shelves.

Rolling Stone is standing by their decision and released a statement in regards to the outrage:

“Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and our thoughts are always with them and their families. The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone’s long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day. The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens. THE EDITORS”

Carson and Producer Angie still weren’t satisfied with this explanation. Take a listen to what they had to say:

“That’s the dumbest justification I’ve ever heard: that he’s the same age as our readers,” Carson said. “If anything, that fuels the glorification issue because you’re a negative influence for the youthful readers by putting this guy up on a pedestal and awarding him, what has historically been, a gift, an awesome thing. You’re on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine! To a lot of people, that means you’ve made it.”

Carson also pointed out that the controversy lies squarely on the cover photo, not Rolling Stone’s decision to cover an important event in our national history.

“It is a great article, by all accounts. It’s very fascinating, it’s really in-depth…but why put him on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine?”

“After the backlash, I would respect Rolling Stone if they said, ‘You know what? We didn’t think it through long enough. He shouldn’t be on the cover. We’re going to pull those back,’ but I mean, it’s a money thing,” Producer Angie added.
