Becky G “From The Block” Reps Her Los Angeles Pride With Carson Daly!

Becky G isn’t your average 16-year-old.

“I was at AM/PM buying slush puppies and throwing them at the number 7 bus in Santa Monica! Just hanging out on Pico Boulevard doing nothing productive!,” Carson Daly said of his own teenage years.

The truth is, Becky doesn’t have time to waste loitering at local convenience stores because she’s too busy becoming one of the fastest rising stars in rap industry.

During her first-ever morning radio appearance, she told Carson all about how she got her start and what’s on the horizon for her promising career.

You may not recognize her name quite yet, but the proud Inglewood native has built up some major buzz after being featured on Cher Lloyd’s “Oath” and a remix of Ke$ha’s “Die Young.”

It all began for Becky around age 9 when her parents lost their home and her entire family moved into their grandfather’s converted garage.

“It was cramped, but you know what? We made the best out of it,” she told Carson Friday morning. “It was kind of like a sleepover for us every night.”

Determined to help her family, Becky G started auditioning for commercials and experimenting with songwriting.

“I call it my little mini-mid-life crisis. I know it sounds crazy, but a part of me did see it as [a way to] help my family, but it was also a way to like express myself and the things I was going through and just to like talk about things and that’s kind of how songwriting came about.”

She was writing and recording her own tracks on GarageBand by 11 and started rapping to separate herself from the pack.

“I would do little girl groups here and there and they would always give the lead parts to the girls who could really sing and stuff and I was like, ‘That’s not fair! What do I have to do?!’”

“I just saw it as an opportunity for myself to show my writing skills and to show them, ‘Well, you can sing and stuff, but I’ll rap and I’ll kind of put the little cherry on top of the song.”

Over time, Becky G amassed a loyal following on YouTube thanks to her renditions of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis” and Bad Meets Evil’s “Lighters.”

In April, she released an updated riff on Jennifer Lopez’s track, “Jenny from the Block,” aptly titled “Becky from the Block.” Her lyrics read like a love letter to the city of Los Angeles, name-checking hot spots like Hollywood and Vine and Randy’s Donuts.

Lopez herself even made a cameo in the music video.

“J. Lo’s dope! She’s awesome. Really humble and really cool.”

“It was honestly one of the most memorable moments of my entire career and will always be because that’s somebody I’ve looked up to basically my whole life,” she added.

Becky G recently signed a record deal with Dr. Luke, an uber-producer who’s worked with the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, P!NK, and many, many more.

“I will be dropping a new music video next week for my new song, ‘Play It Again,” she revealed. “And I’m just going to be releasing new music every few weeks just so I can keep my fans in the loop. I’m working on my album right now…it’s going to be pretty poppin’.”
