After what seems like months of back and forth drama, NBC finally confirmed the news we all knew was coming…Jimmy Fallon will succeed Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show.

The network filled in some of the blanks we’ve been wondering about. Fallon will take over the reins next February when Leno’s contract expires. He’ll be moving the show back to New York City and Lorne Michaels will fill in as executive producer.

Of course, all the late night talk show comics had something to say about the big news. Here are just a few of our favorite moments:

Jimmy Fallon was emotional during last night’s announcement, thanking the crew, his house band The Roots, and of course, all the fans.

Leno seemed pleased with the decision, but he couldn’t help but take another jab at NBC’s sluggish ratings.

“He is a hell of a guy! He’s going to do a great job,” Leno said. “I just have one request for Jimmy: We’ve all fought, kicked and scratched to get this network up to fifth place. Now we have to keep it there! Jimmy, don’t let it slip into sixth! We are counting on you.”

Conan O’Brien knows exactly what Fallon is going through. Even though his experience with NBC ended rather awkwardly, he graciously congratulated Jimmy and called it a “really fun gig.”

David Letterman, who was famously passed over for The Tonight Show job when Johnny Carson retired, made a joke at his own expense.

“I got a call from my mom today,” he said. “She says, ‘Well, David, I see you didn’t get The Tonight Show again.’ ”
