Twitter turned 7 today, which is like 100 in dog years, I think.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s first tweet read, “just setting up my twttr.”

After that, the social media behemoth has gone on to have an estimated 200 million active users, most of whom tweet things that don’t matter, at a rate of over 400 million tweets a day.

Twitter has also become a platform for people to get the word out from world leaders, politicians, celebrities, and spiritual leaders.

If you remember, the first person to break the news of the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound was a guy in Abbottabad, Pakistan who didn’t realize he was doing it. He tweeted, “Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1am (is a rare event).” Then later that night, President Obama announced to the world that Osama bin Laden was dead.

Twitter really is a cool and amazing tool, yet it’s so simple and I think that’s what makes it so cool…share what you want, but keep it short.

I personally follow things I’m interested in and don’t really care for over-tweeting. I like to share things I dig, like music, surfing, photos, or news.

It’s a great tool to get fast news and see what’s happening in the world!

If you also remember, it’s how most of us found out about the late Steve Jobs passing, probably on one of his Apple inventions.

So happy birthday to one of the things you now can’t live without, and happy Tweeting! Remember don’t over-tweet and keep it short!
