Here at AMP Radio, we’ll come up any reason we can to turn something into a competition.
Today, it’s all about the next pope!
In case you haven’t heard, Pope Benedict is stepping down from his position as head of the Catholic Church tomorrow. Usually, popes serve until they die, so his resignation came as a huge surprise. We haven’t had a situation like this in more than 600 years.
The bigwig cardinals and bishops are all making their way to Vatican City to appoint a new leader and believe it or not, but people are actually placing bets on who the lucky man will be just like they would for the Super Bowl or March Madness!
Las Vegas sport books won’t allow betting on elections, but Irish gambling website PaddyPower.com has a whole breakdown on the contenders.
Cardinal Peter Turkson from Ghana would be your best bet at 11/4. If elected, he would be the first-ever black pope & the first non-European to lead the Catholic Church in more than a millennium.
Next up we have Archbishop Angelo Scola from Italy. He’s pretty conservative, a supporter of immigrants’ rights, & and big on outreach to the Muslim world. The oddsmakers put him at 7/2.
Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who hails from Canada, comes in third place at 7/1. He speaks six different languages, spent 10 years in Colombia as a missionary, and in general, has close ties with Latin and South America. In 2011, he didn’t sound too interested in taking over the job, calling the workload and responsibility “a nightmare.”
Further down the list at 33/1 is the highest-ranking American and Carson’s favorite, Cardinal Timothy Dolan. As head of the archdiocese of New York and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, he hasn’t been afraid to challenge the Obama administration on issues like contraception. That being said, he’s only held his cardinal position for about a year.
We’ll have to wait and see who the church chooses. The odds are constantly shifting at PaddyPower, so it’s anyone’s game at this point!
