Jenni Rivera, one of the most influential Mexican singers, tragically passed away Sunday in a plane crash.

Her small plane went down in the mountains of northern Mexico after taking off from Monterrey in the early morning hours.

There were no survivors. Jenni’s publicist, attorney, a family friend, and two pilots were also said to be on board.

The news hit us hard here at AMP Radio. Rivera was a great friend of the morning show and Carson was devastated by the sad news.

“We’ve had some big people come in here and it’s not to take away from a Lady Gaga or Alicia Keys or anybody else that comes through AMP Radio, but there was something very special about Jenni Rivera,” he said this morning.

“Jenni was successful, but a mother first…Christmas Eve is two weeks from tonight and this is the toughest time of the year for something like this to happen.”

The Latina superstar has sold more than 15 million records and was the first first female regional Mexican artist to sell out STAPLES Center in September 2011.

But Jenni was so much more than just a singer. She also filled her time with her extremely successful mun2 reality show, I Love Jenni, and owned several businesses.

The 43-year-old was in the midst of embarking on an English-language crossover career. She had recently signed on for an ABC comedy pilot entitled Jenni.

In October, People En Español named La Diva de la Banda to its 25 Most Powerful Women list.

Rivera last visited us in March, when she explained why she chose to document her fight with breast cancer on her reality show.

“I’ve always been very transparent with my fans and this is obviously something that they need to know how to handle in case they go through it,” she told Carson. “So many people go through it and I believe that God gave me the opportunity to go through not because I’m a bad person; it’s just simply that he needed an example for my peoples.”

Jenni was born and raised in Long Beach by immigrant parents and is survived by her five children and two grandchildren.
