Annnnnd, we’re LIVE! Okay, maybe we aren’t live, but The Voice sure is!

The singing competition kicked off its first live show of season 3 with a new element…the playoffs.

Currently, each coach has 5 vocalists left on their team. America is voting to save two contestants and the coach will choose one more so we can narrow things down to the final 12.

Teams Adam Levine and Blake Shelton were in the hot seat Monday night and this morning, Carson Daly gave us a behind-the-scenes account at how things played out on set.

“Cassadee Pope, Michaela Page, the 16-year-old who did Neon Trees, Julio Cesar Castillo, and Terry McDermott, those are all from Team Blake. They probably had the biggest applause in the room,” Carson pointed out earlier this morning. “I don’t know how it played out on television.”

In particular, Carson has a soft spot for Julio Cesar Castillo, the 21-year-old mariachi singer.

“His father has epilepsy, they’re in dire need of money, and of all these people who are just trying to make it probably to be famous, he’s like, ‘No, I need this for the work. I need to win The Voice or do well on the show to provide. I need to better my career because I have to support my family,'” Carson explained.

Castillo returned to his mariachi roots with “El Rey,” which was a big risk considering the average American audience is pretty unfamiliar with the genre.

“He sang ‘El Rey’ last night, like a very traditional song and it was so good. And I don’t know what his fate is. I don’t know if America voted for him. I don’t know if [Blake] will save him…but it was just cool that he got up there. And I think if you’re a Latino and you watched The Voice last night, I’m sure you probably watched with a great sense of pride that here’s this big prime time show…Nobody said, ‘Hey, do the popular thing.’ He just did what, you know, is true to his roots.”

Castillo could have sung the phone book and gotten a standing ovation. His strong vocals came through loud and clear Monday night.

Amanda Brown – “Dream On”

As for Team Adam, Carson was impressed by Amanda Brown, who Adam stole from Cee Lo after she came up short against teammate Trevin Hunte during the battle rounds.

“Amanda Brown, who did that Aerosmith song, was just awesome, obviously,” Carson said. “It’d be interesting if Adam ended up winning this whole thing, let’s say, with Amanda, with a steal in play.”

Brown chose “Dream On” for her first live performance, which has some particularly challenging high notes at the end. She absolutely nailed it and proved she’s a force to reckon with in this competition.

The Voice is taking the night off for special election coverage. The live playoffs will continue with Teams Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green on Wednesday, and the results show will follow on Thursday.
