In a 3-2 vote Tuesday night, city council members gave their approval to rehire the El Monte lifeguards fired for making a “Gangnam Style” parody video at the Aquatic Center last month.

“Council members approved a recommendation made by Mayor Andre Quintero to direct Interim City Manager Dayle Keller to rehire [the 13 part-time seasonal lifeguards and a pool manager] … pending the completion of a review of the Aquatic Center’s management and policies and procedures,” the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports.

The video showed the lifeguards in their city-issued uniforms doing the K-pop horse dance in the pool, underwater and diving boards at the Aquatic Center.

In a September statement, Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the city of El Monte, said, “There was a clear unauthorized use of city resources and property, including the use of city-issued uniforms during the making of this unauthorized video.”

Now, Mayor Andre Quintero feels the workers will be more likely to cooperate with an “independent review into several accusations that were made about the Aquatic Center’s management if they are employed,” the Tribune says.

Since the story broke, the lifeguards have received an enormous amount of public support via social media and by expressing their concerns at city council meetings.
