Hanson Covers “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together:” Surfer Stephen’s Viral Video Of The Day

Today, we’re going to tie three different bands together. I’m going to see if I can’t make it lead back to the Beastie Boys and feature them in back-to-back Viral Video of the Day posts.

First, let’s start with Hanson. Yeah that’s right fool, I said Hanson. The brothers Hanson exploded on the scene in ’97 with their smash hit “MMMBop,” which drove me crazy, but reached number 1 in 27 countries.

The brothers Hanson all decided to grow up, get married, have kids, and drop off the map. They just popped up back on the radar in Australia covering Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”…like ever!

That’s two bands. Let’s move onto three.

It’s a little-known fact that Hanson’s song “MMMBop” was produced by the Dust Brothers. Who, you ask? The Dust Brothers are Los Angeles-based, Grammy Award-winning producers.

They’re famous for their sample-based music and specifically for their work on the great Paul’s Boutique by the Beastie Boys, Odelay by Beck, and the soundtrack to the film Fight Club.

The Dust Brothers recorded the double platinum Paul’s Boutique with the Beastie Boys in ’89 in a living room in Los Angeles. The big thing for this album was that they sampled a total of 105 songs, which at the time didn’t have to be cleared, making it possible for the album to be made.

If Paul’s Boutique was recorded today, it would cost millions to clear the samples and wouldn’t be fiscally possible. That’s three, sucka.
