Producer Angie is taking off for a week-long vacation to Costa Rica tonight and she could be more excited.

Well, she was excited until Carson decided to rain on her parade!

For the past few days, he’s been giving her a hard time, claiming she’s going to get kidnapped and get her stuff stolen by monkeys.

Angie wanted to prove Carson wrong, so they called up a travel agent to get the real deal.

In short…things went a little awry. Massive bugs, corrupt police, and a monkey-choking boa constrictor were all involved!

Sure, Costa Rica is breathtakingly beautiful, but Hugh, a travel agent whose family is from Costa Rica, said there’s a few things you need to know when you’re planning a trip down south.

“There are bugs out there the size of birds,” he described to Carson and Producer Angie earlier this morning.

It’s winter in Costa Rica right now, which means it’s the rainy season. But Angie shouldn’t be too concerned about the weather putting a damper on her trip.

“You can pretty much set your clock to it. It’ll rain a few hours and then it clears up and you can enjoy the rest of the day.”

The most hilarious danger in Costa Rica? The pickpocketing monkeys!

“They’ll come up to you and they’ll take from you,” Hugh explained. “They’ll take your backpack and your sandals and stuff like that.”

“I was sitting in a restaurant on a beach and a boa constrictor came up and snagged a monkey out of a tree! You hear the ruckus, all the monkeys in the tree and all the wait staff ran over there to see what’s going on and a boa constrictor has a monkey by the head.”

True story. We couldn’t even make that up if we tried.

So what are three basic tips Angie can follow to avoid some of the common tourist mistakes?

“Do not flaunt your money. Don’t get too friendly with the locals and just beware of the monkeys, man. Don’t feed the monkeys because they’ll be after you the whole time. They’ll remember you.”

At this point, Carson was starting to feel a little bad. He was just joking with Angie and didn’t want to freak her out.

Thank goodness Hugh pointed out some fun activities too! He highly recommends zip-lining and white water rafting, just make sure to slather on the sunscreen because you’re closer to the equator so the rays are much stronger.

One of our listeners, Kimberly, traveled to Tamarindo last year and was kind enough to email some of her suggestions as well.

  • Make sure you rent a car with a navigation system because there are no signs anywhere and it can get pretty dicey when it starts to rain.
  • You shouldn’t be scared of all the monkeys. It’s the Howlers that are mean and “throw their poo at you if you get to close to their tree!”
  • The sun goes down early, so make sure to start your day early.
  • “Put on bug spray like it is your religion.” Kimberly recommends applying at least 3 times a day and we’d have to agree. What’s worse than being covered in bites during what should be a relaxing vacation?
  • “Do NOT drink the water.” ‘Nuff said.

Well, now that Producer Angie has the 411, we just hope she makes it back alive! Stay tuned…
