Drake insists there will be another posthumous Aaliyah album later this year. Despite a statement from Aaliyah’s brother to the contrary, Drake said he has the blessings of the late R&B princess’ family.

“To get thirteen, fourteen new Aaliyah songs, everybody should be excited,” he said to Much Music.

Indeed, speculation surrounding Drake’s involvement in the upcoming project has been at times confusing. Following the release of Aaliyah’s new single “Enough Said,” which features the YMCMB rhymer, conflicting reports emerged about who would be behind the project. Would Drake be a factor in the entire album? Would Timbaland, the multi-platinum producer who took Aaliyah to superstar heights in the late ‘90s, have a part in the upcoming project? Or would longtime Drake collaborator 40 take on the lion’s share of the production?

Since the leaking of “Enough Said” fans have passionately voiced their support and dissatisfaction over the Aaliyah-Drake collaboration. And news got even murkier when Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, announced yesterday (August 9) on Aaliyah’s official Facebook page that the project was a no go.

“There is no official album being released and supported by the Haughton family,” Rashad said.

The message conflicts with the packaging. The logo for Aaliyah’s label Blackground Records, which is run by her uncle, appears alongside Drake’s OVO logo on cover art for “Enough Said.” Drake said Aaliyah’s team is behind the project.

“It’s not about me,” he said. “It’s not about 40. You get a new Aaliyah album this year on top of everything. It’s about her and her fans and us just getting the opportunity to give you something that we feel is great. And the people around her, everybody from her family to her old management and label, were like, ‘If there’s anyone out that can do it right now, it’s [you] and 40.’”

Drake also said he is humbled to be attached to Aaliyah’s album.

“That was an honor and we’re going to pull in some classic people, anybody who used to work with Aaliyah that was essential in her career we definitely hope to have them involved. So it’s great. You get a new Aaliyah album this year on top of everything.”—Keith Murphy, CBS Local
