Olympics Opening Ceremony: What To Watch For!

We’ve been looking forward to the start of the summer Olympics for quite some time now and tonight, it finally begins!

Producer Angie scoured the internet any interesting tidbits she could find and here’s what you need to know.

Michael Phelps, the most recognizable face on the U.S. Olympic team, won’t be walking in tonight’s opening ceremony.

He’s taking the time to rest because his first day of competition starts on Saturday.

The women’s soccer team won’t be there either. Their stadium is located all the way up in Scotland and the coach thought it was best to limit their travel so they can be well-rested.

Fencer Mariel Zagunis has been selected as the flag bearer for the U.S. team. In 2004, Zagunis became the first American fencer to win gold at the Olympics in a hundred years.

Keep a good eye on her. She’ll be under strict orders to not tip her flag to the host nation. The U.S. is one of the few countries that doesn’t follow this protocol.

Legend has it that during the London Olympic games in 1908, Irish American shotputter Ralph Rose refused to lower the flag, which is supposed to be a sign of respect, and he supposedly proclaimed: “This flag dips for no earthly king.”
