Each weekday, Producer Angie fills us in on the day’s biggest stories during her 3 Things You Need To Know segment.

But since tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo, she did a little extra research just for you!

This weekend, you can school your gringo amigos with these 5 facts you may not know about Cinco de Mayo!

1. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day: The country’s independence day actually takes place on September 16th.

2. Cinco de Mayo celebrates a victory over France: It all started when Mexico stopped paying back its foreign debt to France. French soldiers invaded to come seize the money and thus began the Battle of La Puebla. On May 5th of 1862, the Mexicans defeated the French, whose army hadn’t lost a battle in 50 years.

3. Cinco de Mayo is more popular in the USA than it is in Mexico: Cinco de Mayo isn’t really that big of a deal in Mexico. In fact, it’s not even a national holiday. It’s mainly celebrated in Puebla, where the battle took place, with parades. We began celebrating it here in the States as a result of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Good Neighbor Policy” of strengthening our ties with Latin America.

4. Cinco de Mayo is a huge holiday in Malta: Yes, that island south of Italy. Apparently, the people LOVE Corona out there…go figure.

5. Chandler, Arizona holds the biggest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the world: Chihuahua parades, races, and beauty pageants are just some of the festivities you can enjoy. But that’s not all, they crown a king and queen of the chihuahuas in honor of the holiday.
