Boy Band Invasion: Carson Breaks It Down

They say music is cyclical and certainly that’s the case when it comes to boy bands.

It all started with the harmonies of Motown. The craze hit a high point with The Beatles and The Beach Boys.

Soon after, Jackson 5 and The Osmonds took off. Then the late 80s/early 90s brought us New Edition and New Kids On The Block.

And who can forget the late 90s with Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and 98°?

Now, there are a ton of new boy bands breaking into the scene and it’s getting hard to keep track of all the new talent!

Since Carson has some major experience with the genre, (TRL, anyone?), he decided to break it all down this morning so we can get a better handle on the situation:

Here are the top 4 boy bands you need to know if you’re a pop culture junkie like us:

One Direction

One Direction is a British-Irish boy band formed during the 7th season of the UK’s X Factor.

Just this week, they made Billboard history, becoming the first U.K. act to have their debut album snag the #1 spot in the first week of its release.

They sold 176,000 albums and kept Adele’s 21 out of the coveted top spot. And if conquering the music world weren’t enough already, Nickelodeon announced they are developing a television show with the boys.

One Direction’s big single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” debuted at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100, which was the highest for a U.K. group since 1998.

The Wanted

This five-some is also a British-Irish band based out of London.

They’ve been popular in the U.K. for awhile, but they blew up here in the States after their hit single, “Glad You Came,” was covered on Glee.

All of us here at AMP Radio can vouch for their cult-like status. When they stopped by the AMP Radio Sound Space a few weeks ago, a crowd of giddy girls waited outside our gates just for a glimpse of them and our webcast of their visit was our website’s 2nd-most viewed artist interview of all time!

The Wanted are determined to break into the American music market, embarking on an exhausting series of promotional interviews and performances, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Their U.S. debut album will be available in stores starting on April 24th.

Big Time Rush

Not all these new boy bands hail from across the pond. Big Time Rush is 100% American-born and raised!

The band was formed in 2009 after a nationwide casting call. They simultaneously signed on for a record deal and a Nickelodeon television show, so the PR machine was definitely working in their favor.

Their first album, BTR, peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts and they’ve capitalized on their tween appeal with not only the TV show, but 5 made-for-TV movies.

Mindless Behavior

The boys of Mindless Behavior have more of an R&B flavor, which should come as no surprise since they were put together by the same people who have worked with Beyonce and Timbaland.

The group has toured with Janet Jackson, Justin Bieber, Jason Derulo, and ironically enough, Backstreet Boys.

#1 Girl, their first album, reached the 7th spot on the Billboard charts.

Hi Carson! LOVED your boy band talk this morning! But I must admit, I was an NLT fan when they came out with their hit, “She Said, I Said.” They were the boy band that Kevin McHale (Artie from “Glee”) was in along with Travis Garland (the guy Perez Hilton was promoting on “American Idol”)! NLT could seriously dance and they had the beats… I mean, TIMBALAND produced some of their songs!!! I made myself a mixtape of their songs… I’m such a geek.

But have you seen this one called Heart2Heart? A song about FACEBOOK LOVE??? How many WINKS can there be in one video?? Is it that bad that I keep watching this??

**Cameo by Lance Bass** Umm…I don’t… it just…they…. ugh, just watch and tell me your thoughts.
