Goodbye American Idol, hello The Voice!

It’s been officially announced that former AI winner [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kelly Clarkson[/lastfm] has been tapped to guest mentor on the hit singing competition hosted by our very own Carson Daly!

And that’s not all, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ne-Yo[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jewel[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Babyface[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lionel Richie[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Miranda Lambert[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alanis Morrisette[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Robin Thicke[/lastfm] will all be joining too!

Kelly will join coach [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blake Shelton[/lastfm] when season 2 premieres after the Super Bowl on February 5th.

Kelly hasn’t been shy about her praise for The Voice. Last September, she said:

The thing I love about The Voice is that they’re more mentors — they’re not judges. I would never really want to be a judge, just because I don’t want to break people’s hearts.

Shelton’s wife [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Miranda Lambert[/lastfm] will also be pitching in for Team Blake[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Adam Levine[/lastfm] has enlisted the services of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alanis Morrisette[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Robin Thicke[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cee Lo[/lastfm] will be kickin’ it with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ne-Yo[/lastfm], and Christina secured [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jewel[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lionel Richie[/lastfm] for her team.

If you don’t remember how The Voice works, here it is in a nutshell:

Prospective contestants take to the stage during the blind audition rounds. This means the coaches can’t actually see them and have to judge on the sound of their voice alone.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

If either [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Christina Aguilera[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Adam Levine[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cee Lo Green[/lastfm], or [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blake Shelton[/lastfm] decide they want that particular singer on their team, they’ll press a button that spins their chair around.

And if more than one coach decides they want that performer on their team, the tables turn and the contestant gets to choose which coach they want to work with.

After the coaches have assembled their own teams from the blind auditions, they each bring on a mentor to help give their proteges a full experience of what it’s really like in the music biz.

From there it’s on to the battle rounds, where team members compete against each other and their own coaches have to decide who stays and who goes.

Then it’s America’s turn to weigh in. Each week, we all get to vote until the final winner is decided.

Make sure to tune in to the premiere The Voice on February 5th right after the Super Bowl on NBC!
