AMP Music Minute Year In Review: Katy Perry, Wiz Khalifa, Drake

[photogallerylink id=135118 align=left]2011 was a good year to be [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm].  She made a name for herself in the record books when her album Teenage Dream became only the second album in history, after[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Michael Jackson[/lastfm]’s Bad, to produce 5 number one singles.

Her song’s “Firework,” “Teenage Dream,” “California Gurls” “TGIF” and “ET” all went straight to the top of the charts and then stayed there. This has been the stuff of legend, all the songs not only making it to No. 1 but also all having their own moment at the top. Her song “Firework” was also recognized as a contender for “Song of The Year” at the Grammy’s.

The California Dreams Tour persisted throughout most of the year and had something like 124 shows wordlwide, and that doesn’t include the Free Show Katy put on for her fans at the very end of the tour, which concluded in Los Angeles

While most of her focus was on music and touring this year, she still made time to show off her acting skills.Perry filmed a segment for Sesame Street only to have it edited out of the final episode after receiving feedback that her outfit may be too revealing for children’s public television.

Then the singer, again making time in her busy schedule, worked on a scene in the new movie,  The Muppets but was also cut out due to time constraints.

However, Perry was an integral part of The Smurfs movie providing a the voice for Smurfette. And she doled out her comedy chops appearing as the host of Saturday Night Live.

Since the year has been winding down , so has Katy. She’s most likely going to use her time away from touring to work on her relationship with husband Russell and perhaps even a family.

All we know is that Katy had a great year and she deserves the break. We can’t wait for her new album, which she has reportedly started working on already. And even if she only achieves half the success she did on this current album, she will still have an awesome year. Talk about balling!

If you feel like you need more Katy, you have the opportunity to smell like the pop star. She released a new and sister fragrance this year called “Purr” to go with her other scent “Meow.”

[photogallerylink id=135642 align=right]Though [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Wiz Khalifa[/lastfm] has been rapping professionally for a number of years now, 2011 marks the first year the whole world got a taste of the Wiz Kid. Breaking into the mainstream with his hit song “Black & Yellow,” Wiz had whole clubs singing his song before most of them even knew how to spell his name!

But that has all changed now and Wiz is becoming a household name. His singles are great for radio. “Roll Up” and “On My Level” had people nodding and bobbing all day to Wiz, while his lesser known songs appealed to his ever growing core of fans.

But Wiz Khalifa stepped up to rock with the big boys this year, teaming up with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Snoop Dogg[/lastfm] to present to the world a glimpse of life for someone that gets to live it “Young, Wild,  & Free.”

This year the two Cali rappers smoked us through a concept album and movie called Mac and Devin Go to High School  complete with soundtrack. And from the likes of their first single, it took no time at all to get a feel for one another. When we last checked in with them earlier this month they told McCabe that they don’t even have to rehearse their shows. It just flows so nicely between them.

Wiz and Snoop go together like peanut butter and jelly. So we say keep making those sandwiches! We can’t get enough.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lil Wayne[/lastfm] stepped out of the spotlight a little bit this year giving his Young Money ringer a chance to step up and he did so with flying colors. We, of course, are talking about Drizzy[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Drake[/lastfm] who’s second studio album Take Care opened at number one and recently reached platinum status.

[photogallerylink id=131993 align=right]Drake spent most of the year touring and working on his album which originally had an October release date. In fact, the original release date had October’s Very Own dropping the album on his very own birthday.

Unfortunately due to sample clearing issues, he had to push the release date back so the audience got the full album. While on the trek to promote the album, Drake told everyone that he hails this one as his best yet. And if you give a good listen, you will probably feel the same. His cohesive and moody tracks take you through his struggles with fame and all that goes along with it. Some are calling it a masterpiece and they aren’t using the term lightly.

The album made it onto just about every significant best list and for good reason. In support of the album, Drake plans on taking his show on the road.

During 2012, Drizzy will rock intimate shows all across America, something he fought to make happen because he feels his music is better for smaller venues. But this tour is also a way for Drake to go back and give back to the fans that have been with him since the very beginning, the college kids. Drake is going to do what he does best and keep being a nice guy while he’s at it. And that’s what we love about him.

Have no fear; Drake brings the Club Paradise Tour and will be serenading LA on March 5 at USC’s Galen Center.

It’s clear now that really all of Young Money are gearing up to own music in 2012. We are so stoked!
