Nearly two and a half years after the death of pop star [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Michael Jackson[/lastfm], his doctor Conrad Murray is facing the music.

Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter just a few weeks ago.

Now he, the prosecution, and members of the Jackson family gathered in a downtown L.A. courtroom today to find out what his punishment would be.

The judge sentenced him to 4 years in prison, which is the harshest punishment he can hand down according to the law.

Judge Michael Pastor attributed his decision to the fact that Jackson was a victim and as a doctor, it was Murray’s responsibility to act responsibly. He defined the doctor’s actions as “egregious” and “a disgrace to the medical profession.”

Furthermore, the judge seemed upset at the documentary that aired on MSNBC where Dr. Murray accepted no responsibility for the singer’s death.

Because of inmate overcrowding, it’s likely Murray will only serve about half that time and be placed in a county jail as opposed to a state prison.

The prosecution was also asking for $100 million in restitution to Jackson’s children.

As for the money issue, the judge did not order restitution at this time because he said the court needed more time to research an appropriate amount.

Conversely, Dr. Murray’s mother sent a letter to the judge yesterday pleading for him to go easy on her son.

She asked him to give Murray community service or probation, but the judge decided that Dr. Murray’s reckless conduct outweighed all the good things he has done with his life.
