Wow. T-Pain is the man that brought us the auto-tuned wonders that are “Buy You A Drink,” “I’m Sprung,” “Bartender,” and “Take Your Shirt Off.”

Except his new melodic piano and string-heavy love ballad, “Drowning Again,” sounds nothing like any of those songs.

In fact, we can barely hear any auto-tune in the song, there are no allusions to being drunk, and there are no strippers. Just a lovelorn T-Pain.

We never expected this Florida-based hip-hop king, so fond of crazy production, to churn out something so minimal, so classic, and yes, so beautiful.

“Drowning Again” really shows T-Pain’s oft-questioned range as an artist and, after this, we wouldn’t mind if he collaborated with someone like Adele.

Now the brief stint with Lily Allen on “5 O’Clock” makes a lot more sense. Is T-Pain showing us his true, soulful colors? We approve!
