Hollywood is rampant with superheroes.

You could go see Thor because it’s a great superhero movie. Or, you could see Thor because it’s a massive, science-fiction experience. If that’s not your fancy, check out the ultimate action-adventure film of the summer.

Whatever reason you choose to see Thor, you won’t be disappointed- the classic hero’s quest finally feels fresh. The storytelling of Kenneth Branagh wraps the best elements of a superhero blockbuster inside a classic drama.

Thor opens nationwide May 6th.

“The hero’s story: An entitled and arrogant young man, who perhaps in order to learn some sort of lesson, must lose everything first,  before he can understand and reacquire its value.”

Kat Dennings – Darcy Lewis

Today, tales of superheroes crowd the silver screen. By good fortune, Thor manages to overcome stale stereotypes by taking advantage of Marvel’s most effective storytelling tool – humor. The comedic timing of Kat Dennings’ Darcy is a fresh addition to Hollywood’s supernatural world, and her sardonic joy is irresistible. Darcy brings the fresh, down-to-earth perspective these giant superhero movies desperately need.

When asked to list her favorites bands, Dennings quoted the best: [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]David Bowie[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”] Muddy Waters[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Jeff Buckley[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]The White Stripes[/lastfm]. Yet she swears if she had her own FM station, radio silence would play. You know, just to mess with people.

Idris Elba & Jamie Alexander – Sif & Heimdall

Joining Hollywood’s growing list of superheroes are Idris Elba and Jamie Alexander. Their chemistry is hard to ignore, both onscreen and off. Jokingly, I asked Jamie about her recent Maxim shoot. She laughed and passed the mic to Idris, who joked about a Maxim shoot of his own. It’s obvious they’re both comfortable, and that same charm and passion drove their performances.

Surprisingly, music played a big role with each actor.

As Heimdall, the soulful, contemplative gatekeeper , Elba credits [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Adele[/lastfm] as a major music influence in his life.

Alexander, the feisty and roguish soldier Sif, claims [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Boston[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Bon Jovi[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Van Halen[/lastfm] among various other 80’s hair metal as her personal soundtrack.

Kenneth Branagh – Director

Using traditional elements among a superhero film may seem unorthodox, but Kenneth Branagh‘s approach moves to story along quickly and elegantly. Utilizing thespian technique in front of a green screen is just Branagh’s way.

The product is nothing short of compelling. The world of Asgard is stellar and extensive, and it is home to many of the great fight scenes of the film. When he needed solemnity among the set, Branagh had the cast march along to Crown Imperial by [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]William Walter[/lastfm], a piece composed and used mainly for royal weddings.

For the occasion of Thor, Branagh recalls Stan Lee‘s “classic” storytelling. He wasted no time comparing Marvel’s narrative to Shakespeare‘s technique, raving both know how to tell a good, simple and profound story. Branagh does the same, and wouldn’t you know it – we’re left with another timeless great work.

Tom Hiddleston – Loki

Tom Hiddleston joins the cast as the fierce and jealous Loki. Meeting Hiddleston for the first time, one notices the immediate dichotomy of self – a smile from Tom reflects the piercing beams of Loki.

The imagination and drive behind his eyes capture us the moment he steps onscreen. Not to say he didn’t have any help.

In order to psyche himself up, Hiddleston made a deal with Branagh: In Loki’s transformation scene, he brought [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Prodigy[/lastfm]’s Music from the Jilted Generation to help transform into “full terrifying mode.”

On the other hand, Tom would prefer to listen to a little [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Bono[/lastfm]. He says his favorite [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]U2[/lastfm] tune is “Where The Street’s Have No Name.”

Chris Hemsworth – Thor

Thanks to the work of Chris Hemsworth, we can all relate to the Norse God Thor. He calls himself the luckiest big kid of all. As a kid, Hemsworth pretended to be a superhero with his classmates. Now, as a slightly bigger kid, he gets to act like a hero on camera. That energy passes to the audience.

Hemsworth even jokes that he found it harder to play Thor without the cape and hammer. Must have been a security blanket, although you can’t tell onscreen. No matter what action he finds himself, Hemsworth plays the character with imagination, wonder, and a sense of poetic intuition.

Which makes sense – Chris enjoys a little [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Van Morrison[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]David Grey[/lastfm] to pass the time. I asked him if Thor would ever listen to [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]AC/DC[/lastfm], to which he laughed and played a few air guitar riffs.

Sitting there, laughing alongside the man who played Thor reminded me just how fun the movie really was. It’s obvious the cast and crew had fun while making the film. You can see it in every frame. This movie deserves to be put on the top shelf with other superhero movie staples. First Spiderman, then Batman Begins, then Iron Man, and now Thor.

And we can’t wait to see them all back in The Avengers.
