Katy Perry might have been one of 2010’s most played artists but when it comes to the GRAMMY Awards she’s on a bit of a losing streak.

Last.fm Trends looks at how likely she is to break that this time around.

From “Teenage Dream” to “Firework,” Katy Perry’s singles came to define pop music at the end of 2010. She had a huge impact, but when it comes to all four of her GRAMMY nominations she’s caught up in the shadow of Lady Gaga and all her ‘Little Monsters’.

The graph below shows how she shapes up in number of plays compared to Gaga (remember, the albums go head-to-head twice).

Perry lays claim to less than half of the total plays of Lady Gaga’s nominated tracks and album. Of course, part of that’s because Gaga’s songs have been around for that much longer – her new material is hotly-anticipated – but that also reflects how much longer it’s had to bury itself into the minds of the judges.

So how are the more recent Trends looking. Let’s take Perry’s strongest track at the moment; “Firework.”

By the time it dropped as a single it was topping her weekly chart, reaching a peak of around 35,000 listeners every seven days. That’s bubbling around the 32,000 mark now.

In contrast Lady Gaga’s current top track only claimed 23,325 listeners last week. In fact, over the past six months its only ever managed to peak around 32,000, and has steadily declined since then.

So Perry’s relatively recent release might just nudge her past Gaga in a few categories. She won’t get all of them, but the relative strength of “Teenage Dream” right now means we think she might just get Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Find out who else we’ve tipped over at Last.fm Trends now, and tune in to The 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards on February 13th, on CBS.
