[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kanye West[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kid Cudi[/lastfm] are two emcees who are not lacking for admirers these days. But it still has to mean something to the hip-hop giants when one of the game’s all time greats gives them props, like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ice Cube[/lastfm] recently did.

“I like what [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kanye West[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lupe Fiasco[/lastfm] are doing and where they are taking hip-hop,” Cube told Hustler Magazine. “Those are good styles that are making hip-hop grow.”

Of course, West has been getting props everywhere in the wake of the release of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, including a perfect 10 from the indie rock savants at Pitchfork.

Cube also took a second to address the old school hip-hop fans who might not be happy with the genre’s current direction.

“It’s not dying as people say just because the mainstream is not paying attention anymore,” he said. “It’s just back to where it came from–underground. In the ’90s, mainstream took hip-hop and tried to play it out. Rap is something that can’t die because it’s the voice of the youth. There is always something to be said by somebody somewhere, and there’s so many ways to say it now.”

Do you think hip-hop is ready to go back underground? And if so, are West and Cudi two of the guys to take it there?
