Over the years we’ve come to expect great things out of French electronic music duo [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Daft Punk[/lastfm] consisting of  musicians [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Thomas Bangalter[/lastfm].

The guys that brought us Homework, Discovery and Human After All have now collaborated with music supervisor [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jason Bently[/lastfm] and Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski to come up with a sound that not only reflects the delicate electronic sensibilities that are Daft Punk, but aid in the telling of the Tron:  Legacy story.

From the get go, the duo knew that they would not approach this soundtrack like their usual Daft Punk albums saying:

We knew from the start that there was no way we were going to do this film score with two synthesizers and a drum machine.

Instead, the two enlisted the help of an 85-piece orchestra, and recorded at AIR Lyndhurst Studios in London.  And that’s what you have to keep in mind, the album takes Daft Punk’s sound and makes it applicable to not only the themes of the film, but the use of an orchestra.  So if your hope is to ingest the same heavy beats that made them famous with Homework, think again.

In someways, this could come to hurt the soundtrack, which on it’s own is excellent.  However, the anticipation for another Daft Punk album may overshadow the intricate excellence of this album, which in itself is understated in it’s magnitude and morose in it’s message.

Still, there are heavy hints of Daft Punk’s sound woven throughout the soundtrack, perhaps none more than on the track “Derezzed,” which was subsequently used for the extended Tron Legacy trailer which was released to the public earlier this month.

This album is cataclysmic in the way it undertakes the visual feeling of the film and perhaps cannot be beat.  But for those of you that plan to amp it up while you’re jamming at work or driving in your car, you won’t be disappointed.  Now we just have to wait for the December 17th release date of the film to see how perfectly the sound matches director Joseph Kosinski’s vision.
