Akon: Hip-Hop Is “A Virus”

Akon Says Hip-Hop Is A Virus

Fans, musicians and critics alike often find themselves asking, “what is hip-hop?” The genre has expanded into so many areas in the last decade that it can be hard to tell. Maybe that’s why, instead of defining hip-hop by its sound, rapper [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Akon[/lastfm] has gone with another comparison.

“As long as there is music playing, hip-hop is going to find it’s way into it,” [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Akon[/lastfm] said. “So I don’t think it’s going no where or going anywhere no time soon. It’s literally a virus, it’ll effect that you put in front of it.”

Of course, no one is concerned anymore about hip-hop being a fad. But [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Akon[/lastfm] does have a pretty good thing about hip-hop being, wel, viral. Take [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jay-Z[/lastfm], for example. His solo stuff, of course, is raw, uncut hip-hop. But then he spreads the “disease” into hard rock…

…and across the pond into Brit-pop…

…and even into the biggest band in the world.

What are some of your favorite “viral” hip-hop moments? Times when hip-hop has merged with other genres of music to produce something special?
