When [lastfm]Willow Smith[/lastfm] announced she’d been signed to [lastfm]Jay-Z[/lastfm]’s record label, Roc Nation, many eyebrows were raised because she is only 9-years-old and many likened her to a miniature [lastfm]Rihanna[/lastfm]. However, with her new video for “Whip My Hair,” Smith has shown that she is no pop princess pirate. Edgy, colorful, innovative; Willow Smith’s vid for “Whip My Hair” shows that this girl is poised to stage a mutinous take-over and push the boundaries of the music industry.

The video takes place in a totally white-washed school reminiscent of an insane asylum (is this a profound political and racial metaphor?). While the environment around her is completely devoid of color, Willow Smith walks in with her old-school boombox, the only representation of dynamism and color in the room. She dips her long braids into some pots of primary colored pant, blasts her boombox, and “whips her hair back and forth,” coloring the walls and the students around her, inspiring them to dance.

We love that the video is not adult, but it’s also not childish and cutesy at all. Willow Smith and the director are definitely trying to convey a message to all ages, whether your hair is “long or short,” to express yourself however you please. Even if that means standing out in the crowd.

Or do you think Smith is trying to be too adult? Do you think she should stick to being a kid?  Do you like the video?  Let us know in the comments.
