98490060 Wyclef Jean Appealing Haiti Presidential Ballot Decision

[lastfm]Wyclef Jean[/lastfm]’s bid to become Haiti’s next president hit a bump in the road when he was not included in the country’s list of approved candidates.  Why is the [lastfm]Fugee[/lastfm]’s frontman fighting this decision?

After hearing Haiti’s decision to deny him the ability to run for President Wyclef Jean released the following statement:

After careful consideration and much soul-searching, I have made the decision to contest Haiti’s board of elections’ pronouncement stating that I am ineligible to run for the presidency of the country. I will be seeking a solution through legal channels, and I urge my countrymen to be patient through this process.

The list of 19 approved candidates was released by Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council on Friday.  After discovering he wasn’t eligible, Jean seemed to be at peace with the ruling.  “I respectfully accept the committee’s final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same,” he said.

Officials did not explain why Jean’s candidacy was denied, but critics believe he was rejected because he hasn’t been a resident of Haiti within the past five years.

[lastfm]Wyclef Jean[/lastfm] has been a powerful advocate for the people of Haiti since the January 7.0 magnitude earthquake.  The 40-year-old singer was born in Haiti and continues to support the island nation through his charity, Yéle Haiti.
