Google To Launch Music Service

You had to know that Google wasn’t going to let Apple get all that iTunes money unchallenged, didn’t you? Find out more about Google’s planned music service…after the jump!

Google Music Service is looking like it is set for introduction in time for the holidays this year. It’s eventual goal: To stream music to your Android phone, meaning it can play music without taking up space on the phone’s limited storage drive.

First though, Google will likely set up an online music store, much like the iTunes store except that, instead of needing iTunes to purchase songs, you’ll be able to do it through Google in your browser. For instance, you could Google “[lastfm]Katy Perry[/lastfm],” and along with the news of the day relating to the California Gurl, there will be links to download her songs.

As ubiquitous as Google is in tech circles, though, it has a lot of work to do to catch up with Apple in terms of music. According to the Wall Street Journal, 28 percent of all music purchases – that’s online and in stores – in the first quarter of 2010 went through iTunes! That’s more than its next two competitors, Amazon and Wal-Mart, combined!

  • Would a Google music store get your business? Or are you hooked to iTunes?
