Snap! Judgment: Funny People, The Collector

Funny People

Funny People

Don’t be fooled by the title. Although there are plenty of “Funny” moments, this isn’t your typical Adam Sandler movie as he goes, once again, for more drama and less toilet humor. I checked this out a few weeks ago and was left with mixed feelings. My friend who saw it with me compared it to Sandler’s movie “Click.” Valid comparison, but “Funny People” is straightforward and very realistic. Sandler plays a famous actor/comedian who gets diagnosed with a terminal illness, after which he reevaluates his life. Seth Rogan, who’s a broke, struggling stand-up comedian ends up becoming his assistant and unexpectedly for him, his boss’ confidant. Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill also star in this, and you get to see Eric Bana act in a comedic film (tidbit: he started his career in sketch comedy). If you’re a stand-up fan like me, you’ll love catching all the cameos. Enjoyed it, but the one MAJOR flaw? Grab some popcorn, a drink, AND gummy worms before you take your seat because this one’s gonna be a LOOOONG one.

The Collector

Ok, I watched the trailer and didn’t get what this movie is supposed to be about… Except that it’s supposed to be scary? Key words there: supposed to be. Well, from some reading I found that it’s basically about one thief getting caught in another thief’s booby-traps after trying to rob a house. Sounds simple enough. The “traps around the house” part is very “Saw”-esque, but I don’t think it’s going to be nearly as intense as the “Saw” horror movie series. The only name I recognized from the cast list was Andrea Roth, from the TV show “Rescue Me.” Either way, if you have the extra cash and are one of those people who enjoys paying to get scared (can’t promise that’ll happen here), have at it.

Aliens in the Attic

Oh, boy. The title makes me wanna gag, but I guess I’m not the target audience for this one. Basically a group of kids have to save their house, their family, and the WORLD from green, cartoon-like aliens that took it upon themselves to crash there. Oh, and it takes place in Maine… Maine? Probably the most exciting thing that’s ever happened there. All you “High School Musical” fanatics will be glad to see Ashley Tisdale in this, but for me, the more exciting (and surprising) actors are SNL alumni Kevin Nealon and Tim Meadows, Andy Richter, and Doris Roberts. I gotta say, if I were a kid this would probably be on my must-see list. So if you’re taking the family out for something that won’t offend grandma yet still entertain the tweens, go see this.
